Providing vocals and new songs for Bachata Symphony

Melissa Garay, a native of the Bay Area, discovered her passion for music during her formative
years, finding inspiration in the harmonies of church and school choirs. Her journey into the
local music scene marked the beginning of her exploration into a wide range of musical genres,
from traditional jazz to R&B and diverse Latin styles.

Melissa’s talent has led her to collaborate with renowned artists, including vocalist Tony Lindsay
of Maze and Santana, esteemed jazz guitarist Randy Vincent, and bassist Chris Amberger,
celebrated for his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. She has also shared the stage with
percussionist Mingo Lewis, whose career includes performances with icons such as Al Di Meola
and Chick Corea.

Her dedication to musical excellence is reflected in her academic achievements, which include
several degrees and a Master’s in Music with a concentration in jazz studies from San José State
University. As part of her studies, Melissa embraced a global perspective, studying abroad and
performing with the SJSU Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble in Havana, Cuba. This international
experience enriched her artistry and deepened her appreciation for diverse musical traditions.

In addition to her dynamic academic career, Melissa is deeply committed to music education. As
the former choir director at the prestigious Mexican Heritage Plaza, she nurtured the talents of
emerging young musicians, instilling in them a profound appreciation for the arts. Her expertise
as a vocal instructor, passion for music theory, and composition further enables her to guide
aspiring artists in unlocking their creative potential and achieving new heights of artistic
expression.

Currently, Melissa is a leading figure in the Bay Area music scene, serving as the lead vocalist
for several distinguished ensembles, including the New Acoustic Collective, Colectivo, the
Garay-Kaiser Duo, and Orquesta Liberación. Her recent performances with Conjunto Trujillo,
paying homage to the late legendary Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, have been met with
resounding success, drawing sold-out audiences and setting the stage for an exciting lineup of
performances in 2025.

Melissa is presently embarking on exciting new ventures, including the creation of her debut solo
album, a project that reflects her diverse musical influences. She is also collaborating with
American jazz guitarist, composer, author, and lecturer John Stowell, and acclaimed recording
artists Jason Keiser, an innovative project that combines exceptional guitar artistry, sophisticated
harmonies, and her captivating vocal performances—a celebration of jazz's depth and creativity.
